From ashes to assets

The Quality Pork Processing facility in Brechin had suffered significant damage due to a fire. Togail Roofing & Cladding Ltd was commissioned to restore the building, effectively bringing it back to life. This project presented a unique opportunity to transform a severely damaged structure into a fully functional and modernised processing facility.

Challenge

The project presented several significant challenges:

  • Structural Damage: Extensive fire damage had severely compromised the building’s structural integrity and aesthetics, necessitating a thorough assessment of the steelwork to determine its condition.
  • Fire Residue: The presence of fire residue and soot required specialist cleaning before renovation could begin.
  • Upgrading Standards: The client sought not only a restoration of the facility but also gained an upgrade on the thermal performance of the roof.

What Togail Roofing & Cladding Ltd Did

Togail Roofing & Cladding implemented a comprehensive restoration strategy. The team began by thoroughly brushing down the existing steelwork to assess its condition. Professional cleaners were brought in to remove all fire residue and contaminants, preparing the structure for renovation. The existing steelwork was then repainted to protect against corrosion and improve aesthetics.

Working with the structural engineer within Atom TPM, Togail designed and installed new steelwork to reinforce the building’s structure, which was completed with necessary calculations and safety assessments. Kingspan composite panels were supplied and installed on the new frame, providing superior insulation and fire resistance. Finally, new doors were supplied and installed, completing the building’s transformation.

The Impact

The transformation of a fire-damaged building that could then be utilised within the state-of-the-art processing plant showcases the potential for innovative restoration techniques in the face of severe structural damage. By successfully rehabilitating the existing steelwork and integrating new structural elements, Togail Roofing & Cladding demonstrated that even severely compromised buildings can be salvaged and improved rather than demolished and rebuilt from scratch. This approach saved time and resources and minimised environmental impact, aligning with industry demand for sustainable construction practices.

The use of Kingspan composite panels in the renovation process highlights the importance of incorporating modern materials in restoration projects. These panels enhanced the facility’s aesthetics and significantly improved its energy efficiency and fire resistance. This upgrade is a model for how post-fire renovations can be leveraged to future-proof industrial facilities.

Furthermore, the collaboration between Togail Roofing & Cladding and structural engineers in designing and implementing the reinforcements has set a new standard for interdisciplinary cooperation in renovation projects. This approach ensures that restored buildings not only look new but also meet or exceed current safety and performance standards.

The unique challenges faced and overcome in this project highlight the need for skilled professionals who can navigate the complexities of restoring fire-damaged structures while incorporating modern improvements.
