Sheltering the spirit of Deanston Distillery

Deanston Distillery, on the banks of the River Teith in Perthshire, uses traditional methods to create its award-winning ‘uniquely waxy new make spirit‘ and also served as a filming location for Ken Loach’s 2012 film, The Angel’s Share.

Originally built as a cotton mill in 1785, the building was transformed into a whisky distillery in 1965. Time had taken its toll and the roof was failing, with one corner visibly lifting, posing a significant risk to the distillery’s operations and valuable equipment.

Challenge

  • Partial Roof Failure: A section of the existing roof had detached, putting the building at risk of water leaks if left unresolved.
  • Overlay Complexity: The project involved precisely aligning a new roofing system with the existing roof overlay.
  • Safety Considerations: Carrying out work at height in an operational distillery.

What Togail Roofing & Cladding Ltd Did

Togail approached the Deanston Distillery project with detailed planning and precision. Understanding the challenge of integrating new roofing with the existing structure, the team ensured both roof sections were built to align exactly for seamless integration.

Safety was prioritised by erecting specialist scaffolding with high-level edge protection, allowing distillery operations to continue uninterrupted while protecting workers and maintaining excellent safety standards on site.

For long-lasting durability and waterproof protection, Togail selected Protan single-ply membrane. As an approved Protan Partner Contractor, Togail installed the roofing to the highest industry standards, ensuring maximum reliability and durability.

The Impact

Deanston Distillery benefited immediately from the project’s successful completion. The new roofing solution delivered robust, watertight protection with a 20-year warranty, safeguarding essential equipment and valuable whisky stocks for decades to come.
