Raising the roof for food production

Macphie, a prominent food processing company in Stonehaven, sought to replace the roof of its existing production area and offices. Given the critical nature of their operations, any renovation work needed to be carried out with minimal disruption to their ongoing activities.

Challenge

The project faced two main challenges:

  • Operational Production Area: The production area needed to stay operational throughout the roofing works, requiring careful planning and execution.
  • Multi-layered Build-up: The existing roof had a multi-layered build-up that was not fully known before starting, making the demolition and replacement process more complicated.

What Togail Roofing & Cladding Ltd Did

Togail Roofing & Cladding Ltd addressed these challenges through a comprehensive approach:

  • Demolition: The team carefully stripped approximately 1,000m² of the existing multi-layered roof build-up while ensuring safety and efficiency.
  • Structural support: New steel purlins were designed and supplied to support the new roof structure, with detailed calculations provided to ensure compliance with structural integrity standards.
  • Roof installation: Kingspan composite roof panels were installed on the newly fitted purlins, along with single-ply gutters, for optimal drainage.
  • Additional works: A bar-and-bracket system was fitted over an existing roof area of approximately 600 m², accompanied by a new insulation quilt and a steel top sheet to enhance thermal performance.

The Impact

The renovated facility now features a state-of-the-art roofing system that has greatly improved workplace safety, operational efficiency, and energy performance. By installing the Kingspan composite roof panels and additional insulation, Macphie has significantly improved its thermal efficiency, aligning with broader industry trends towards more sustainable and energy-efficient manufacturing processes.

The improved weather protection offered by the new roof safeguards the production area against leaks and damage, ensuring a safer working environment and protecting valuable equipment and products. This is vital in the food industry, where strict hygiene standards are essential. The project’s success in maintaining operational continuity throughout the renovation demonstrates the potential for carrying out major structural work in active food production facilities without compromising output or quality.
